Kuantan, Malaysia – Aug 31, 2024 – In a heartfelt celebration of Malaysia's independence, BASF PETRONAS Chemicals proudly announces the successful completion of its latest mangrove planting activity, accompanied by a heartwarming baby sea turtles release event. This initiative marks a significant step towards environmental preservation and community engagement in Pantai Chendor, Cherating. The event uniting more than 400 participants from all walks of life to contribute to the restoration of our coastal ecosystems. Together with our employees, family members, authorities & close stakeholders and surrounding community, a total number of 3000 mangrove saplings species - Rhizophora Apiculata (bakau minyak) and Rhizophora Mucnorata (bakau kurap) were planted by the participants guided by our collaboration partner and volunteers from the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Pahang Branch. Followed by the heartwarming experience of releasing 150 baby sea turtles into their natural habitat. This is in line with the company’s commitment towards United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) number 15 “Life on Land”. This dual activity aims to educate the community about the significance of mangroves and the challenges faced by marine life, particularly endangered turtle species. "We are excited to engage with our family and community in this meaningful activity that not only celebrates our independence but also emphasizes the importance of protecting our natural environment," said Tan Aik Meam, Managing Director, BASF PETRONAS Chemicals. "By planting mangroves, we are not only investing in the future of our ecosystems but also creating habitats for baby turtles that are released during this event." added Jehan Bakar, Chairperson of the MNS Pahang branch.
