Aroma ingredients are sold to the fragrance and flavor industry, used mainly in home and personal care products and fine fragrances, as well as in the food industry and in pharmaceutical applications.
Aroma
The integrated aroma ingredients complex in Gebeng is the first of its kind outside of Germany. The first plant is located at BASF’s site in Ludwidgshafen, Germany.
The new complex houses a facility to produce citral and its precursors, as well as associated downstream plants that manufacture citronellol and L-menthol to meet the growing demand for citral-based products in the fragrance and flavour industry. The MYR1.5 billion (approximately $500 million) complex, with its cutting-edge technology, will establish Malaysia as an important hub in Asia Pacific for the world-wide supply of aroma ingredients.

Start-up of a new integrated aroma ingredients complex in Kuantan, Malaysia, was initiated in 2017 and is conducted in a step-wise approach. We have already achieved several key milestones: production of citral and its precursors has been started up successfully, and the first volumes of citronellol have been produced and shipped to customers.
Citral is nature-identical to the main component of many essential oils like lemongrass, and is used as fresh-citrus and fruity notes in fragrances and flavors. It is also used in the production of vitamins A and E and as precursor for aroma ingredients.
Citronellol is used for a fresh, powerful, and long-lasting rose fragrance, and is an indispensable component for numerous fresh-floral compounds.
Menthol is the very essence of freshness. Whether in toothpaste, chewing gum, or candy, the minty taste of the world's most popular flavor ingredient can be found in many everyday products. Due to its cooling effect Menthol is also used for cosmetic and personal care products such as shower gels or shaving creams.
